Conservation Exploration for ages 13 to 103!

Spring Dates and Themes

New Jersey encompasses a remarkably diverse set of ecozones despite its small size, ranging from northern glaciated highlands to southern sandy pine barrens and coastal marshes. It is not surprising that New Jersey is home to 71 species of reptiles and amphibians. This class will survey multiple species of reptiles and amphibians focusing on specialized habitats such as wetland, saltmarshes and upland forests.

Was this forest once farmland? Was it logged in the past? Was there ever a major catastrophe like a fire or a windstorm that brought trees down? Was there ever a glacier here? The forests we see in New Jersey today have been influenced in many ways by what has happened in the past, and clues as to whether those unique features are natural or human-caused can be found if you know how to look for them. This class will help you to observe the clues that allow you to visualize the history of the land. This class is based on Thomas Wessels’ book “Reading the Forested Landscape: A Natural History of New England”, it will include a hike through South Mountain Reservation to allow for real-time investigation of a local forest.

Did you know that Essex County was once covered by an ice sheet one mile thick? From the Pleistocene glaciation that ended about 12,000 years ago to the breakup of supercontinent Pangea 200 million years ago, Essex county and the surrounding area stands at the precipice of our continent and was sculpted by geological forces that are still in play today. Learn how human geography is influenced by these factors and to identify and study familiar local landforms.
